A while back there was a demo doing the rounds (from Demo) of Total Immersion adding 3D onto a live video feed. High points were a hand holding a rose and a helicopter flying out into auditorium. The immediacy and lighting was interesting but the models/animation was pretty basic.

They’ve done some work on that as well as looking at ‘real-world’ applications for the technology and were showcased on Japanese TV. Well worth a watch. At least for the audience giving huge props. Note how ALL the applications involve a mobile phone.
