Long bets

December 7th, 2007 by mcadwallader

“In a Google search of five keywords or phrases representing the top five news stories of 2007, weblogs will rank higher than the New York Times’ Web site.”

Think you can predict the future of computer hardware using Moore’s law? Or future successes in the development of artificial intelligence?

Put your money where your mouth is.

The people who brought you this fusion of futurology and reckless gambling are also hoping to build a clock that will tick for 10,000 years. They are called the Long Now Foundation and they say they were established in 01996. This five digit dating convention is an attempt ‘to solve the deca-millennium bug which will come into effect in about 8,000 years’.

Cowcross Street

December 5th, 2007 by admin

On behalf of missmimi:

If you haven’t seen it yet, Metropolitan Workshop on Cowcross Street have done an advent calendar in their lovely large windows again this year. A different scene in gingerbread will be unveiled each day with MW donating £100 to charity for each one.

I loved this last year, just that they were getting involved in the business of cheering up and saying hello to their pedestrian neighbours for no other reason than it’s a pleasant thing to do this time of year. The great majority of non-retail businesses don’t consider the people attached to the daily footfalls past their windows, so make a detour or visit them one lunch time to enjoy a rare piece of xmas spirit.

Magnetic Movie

December 3rd, 2007 by stephan

mag_movie_3small.jpgI saw this last night on Channel 4. It’s a short film that attempts to visualise magnetic fields. The filmmakers (semiconductor) spent 5 months in a NASA space science laboratory, and filmed interviews where the scientists attempt to explain the theories behind magnetic fields. The filmmakers then added visualisations of these theories, reflecting their understanding of the complex subject matter (rather than being scientifically accurate).Strange but beautiful.Link: Magnetic Movie
