Newly Designed Bike Lane
September 25th, 2007 by nicIf you have always wanted to ride your bike in Manhattan and were afraid to, you might want to reconsider. Last week the NY Times reported that there are plans for a newly design bike lane on 9th Avenue, from 16th street to 23rd street. NYC’s transportation commissioner Jannette Sadik-Khan said that work would begin shortly and that the remade street would be completed by next month.
The design uses a lane of parked cars to protect cyclists from other traffic. By placing the bike lane directly next to the sidewalk on the western edge of 9th Avenue, in the direction of traffic. The plan also takes a lane from cars, creating more room for pedestrians and for the bicycle lane.
The question is… will the bike messengers use it? Check this clip on how not to ride your bike in NYC, which can be inspirational for the strong.
