Ikea_Bringing it to you

April 12th, 2008 by sauce

ikea_1.jpgSwedish furniture giant IKEA has converted the Kobe Portliner Monorail into a moving showroom before the April 14 opening of a new retail outlet at Port Island. The redecorated train, which features a colorful exterior, bright upholstery and fancy curtains, will carry passengers in style until May 6.

Is this the ultimate experiential catalogue for the time pressured urbanites. Ikea have mastered the art of ensuring anyone who interfaces with them at the store is taken on the choreograped journey. This just takes it one step beyond and gets it to us with little effort - great idea, although with Ikea being used to deck out most expats residences, seeing it all on the train too may be a tad too far.

Sofa Lamp_soft and sumptuous

Milan 08: Sofa Lamp is a lampshade with quilted upholstery inspired by a Chesterfield sofa.

render-4.jpg

Designed by Spanish designers CuldeSac and Héctor Serrano for Dutch furniture brand Moooi, it will be launched in Milan during the furniture fair later this month.

render-1.jpg

“By taking the traditional furniture design of the Chester sofa out of context and giving it a hint of humor we achieve a fresh vision turning the Sofa Lamp into what could become a great classic of the lighting industry.

render-2.jpg

From the social perspective the Chester transmits luxury, a feeling of warmth, and with its unique and recognizable aesthetic it is often placed at the central point of social interaction in a living room.

render-5.jpg

With the Sofa Lamp the essence of the Chester is maintained and adapted to lighting creating a lamp that through its design and connotation transmits all the social values of this emblematic piece of furniture in addition to the natural attraction of the light effect itself.” CuldeSac and Héctor Serrano

Collaboration

The relationship between CuldeSac™ and Héctor Serrano began at the Royal College of Art in London when the founding members of CuldeSac™ (Alberto Martinez & Pepe Garcia) were academic peers. From then a close personal and professional relationship was established and has grown into a mix of inspiring collaborations and even having Héctor as the godfather of Alberto’s daughter Anna.

Due to the many commitments of both studios, CuldeSac™ and Hector Serrano, collaborate much less than they would like to. Their last joint project was La Siesta for La Mediterranea in 2002. La Siesta is considered an emblematic creation representing an ideal balance between the traditional and contemporary in both design and concept. Currently the Siesta is being exhibited in many museums throughout the world.

With this new collaboration both teams are thrilled to have the opportunity to work together and for a company such as Moooi. They will be the first Spanish design studios to collaborate with Moooi.

Vertical limit

Extending the classic style of the brand Veuve Clicquot this premium limited edition showcase, combines beauty with function. Designed by Porche Design and at $70,000 a pop, it may be a little out of us lowly designers range. At least the champagne gives us a taste of this classic style.

Measuring over six feet tall Vertical Limit holds 12 magnums of Clicquot’s most prized vintages and only 15 were made worldwide. Each Vertical Limit is fully handmade and each of the 12 vintages are housed in its own compartment with the temperature set at a constant 12 degrees celsius—ideal for tasting and the same climate as the Veuve Clicquot cellars in Reims, France.

“We wanted to create a product to match the ultra high-end superiority of the Veuve Clicquot brand, so we tried to emphasize the importance of each bottle. We thought that each bottle should have its own stage essentially. This is why we gave each bottle its own door coupled with the classic Veuve Clicquot yellow as a light. We did this so each bottle received the attention it deserves, rather than opening one door to a collection of bottles. In making a superior looking product we also decided to make the Vertical Limit a tall object”.
